NFEC Mission of the Chapters Across the UK
The National Financial Educators Council’s mission is to equip people across the UK with the knowledge, skills, and support needed to build lasting financial wellbeing. We advance this mission by bringing together a diverse global network of financial wellness champions and providing them with high quality training and practical resources, enabling them to guide individuals and communities towards stronger financial security.
We achieve meaningful impact by establishing rigorous standards, creating evidence based financial education curriculum, and developing robust assessments that measure real progress. Through partnerships with schools, employers, and community organisations, we scale proven programmes that improve financial capability nationwide.
By continually evaluating outcomes and refining our approach, we ensure that our initiatives deliver tangible, long term improvements in people’s financial lives.
High Education Standards, Real Social Impact
The UK Chapter is dedicated to advancing financial educators who serve the community and are held to the highest professional and educational standards. By supporting educator training, professional development, and evidence-based instruction, the chapter helps ensure that financial education programs deliver meaningful learning experiences and measurable improvements in people’s financial lives.
History
The National Financial Educators Council (NFEC) was established in 2006 in the United States with the aim of elevating the quality, professionalism, and long‑term impact of financial education. What began as a nationwide effort to provide financial educators with structured training, curriculum materials, and recognised professional standards has since evolved into a global movement focused on strengthening financial capability across the world.
Today, graduates of the Certified Financial Education Instructor (CFEI®) programme support communities in more than 100 countries. The first UK chapters emerged in 2011 across England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, coinciding with the earliest international CFEI graduates. Because many of the most effective approaches to teaching personal finance – such as behaviour‑centred learning, practical application, and outcome‑driven instruction – translate well across borders, these early efforts laid the groundwork for expanding NFEC programmes internationally.
As global interest in financial capability continues to rise, the NFEC works with regional partners to broaden access to high‑quality financial education while respecting local economic conditions, cultural contexts, and policy landscapes. Through this work, the organisation contributes to strengthening the UK’s financial literacy infrastructure and supporting wider economic empowerment.
